From Those Who Care: Further Case Studies of ABA with People with Autism
is a book of case studies of ABA treatment
plans, written by the people who carried them out. The authors are all direct
care workers in the field of the autistic-spectrum disorders. The book contains
clinical information, but even more importantly, demonstrates the emotion behind
the plans.It is available at:

5. Graduated
Applied Behavior Analysis A system for tailoring programming to student
need is presented, based upon the original scientific methodology of ABA. A
training manual of basic concepts within ABA is also included, as well as a
longitudinal study describing the success of a preschool that employs a graduated
system of ABA.
With Behavioral Detectives, Drs. Newman & Reinecke and colleagues have written an interesting, accurate and entirely accessible book focusing on the practice of ABA with learners with developmental disabilities. By presenting case scenarios and requiring one to, in effect, follow the data to determine went wrong, the authors place the reader in the middle of a case conference with knowledgeable and experienced mentors who are simultaneously creative and conservative. A very worthwhile experience. Peter F. Gerhardt, Ed.D President & Chair, Scientific Council Organization for Autism Research --Book jacket
Review What applied behavior analyst doesn't love a good mystery? Drs. Newman and Reinecke and team were extraordinarily clever in creating an instructional format that will immediately engage, entertain, and educate. Through a series of well-designed and, best of all, real cases, readers are offered the opportunity to investigate and solve behavioral mysteries with intelligence, humor, and compassion. I look forward to sharing this with my students! Shahla Alai-Rosales, Ph.D., BCBA University of North Texas --Book jacket

What the Experts Say about
When Everybody Cares

Dr. Bobby Newman has written an extremely interesting book, When Everybody Cares: Case Studies of Applied Behavior Analysis with People with Autism. The book presents some very practical, real life examples of helping persons with autism using deceptively simple, but at the same time complex, behavioral methods. Each chapter presents one or more stories, written from the heart, not the head, describing the author's work in helping clients overcome challenging behavioral problems...What makes this book different is the depiction of the thoughtful caring and professionalism which undergird effective behavioral treatment. Professor Newman does an excellent job in presenting the human side of behavior analysis, a work which will prove equally popular with parents and professionals alike.

Words From Those Who Care
This book is a marvelous little gem. The field of ABA, as applied to autism, has recently experienced significant growth and attention. There still remains great misunderstanding, however. This is perhaps because we emphasize, more than other fields, a very precise language that at times can be obtuse and seemingly detached from the perspective of consumers and even other professionals. This book describes many case studies from the perspective of the people involved and their sense of joy, wonderment, accomplishment, and sadness. It shows the "other" face of ABA, the motivation and emotions of the individuals who provide and receive services. It is not a "how to" book. It is a book about why we do what we do. This is must reading for parents and practitioners. It will make you smile, make you sad, and most importantly, will make you think. It exposes one of the best kept secrets: ABA folks have some of the biggest hearts around.

What it is: This is a book of warm, readable, personal, informally written case studies, with a point, actually several points. Case studies are always fun to read; these are no exception. Parents of children labeled "autistic" and paraprofessionals and professionals working with the children should find this book interesting, informative, and encouraging, though realistic. The book is full of examples of behavior analysis used to help the children. Here are some of the points I extracted:
Behavior-analysis informed procedures work to help the children acquire good
behavior and get rid of bad behavior. The case studies address many of the common
problems, such as prompt dependence.
It ain't easy; it may take a long time and require much patience.
It ain't easy; the first attempt often fails; and you will have to recycle with creativity and imagination.
Have faith and persist; it will work.
You will feel great about the child's accomplishments, as he or she progress throughout the year.
The book is full of enough technical details to give parents and workers some ideas about how to solve problems; yet those details are presented in a way that parents and paraprofessionals can easily understand them, even with humor. I'm now trying to figure out how I can work this book into one of my autism practicum courses for college students; the college students would benefit from it and would love it because this book is up close and personal.
What it isn't: This book is not a collection of highly technical, cutting-edge, peer-reviewed journal articles that would be intelligible only to professional behavior analysts and their grad students. There is a place for such books, but generally not in the hands of beginners.
Who's responsible for this book: The editors are Bobby Newman, Dana Reinecke, and Leo Newman. This is the second book of this sort that Bobby has produced, the first one based on his own case studies, this one based on the case studies of a large number of people, and yet these case studies keep Bobby's easy-reading, informal, humorous style.
