Sex Therapy
In 1997, Dr. Newman published
an article in THE JOURNAL OF SEXUAL EDUCATION AND THERAPY on the use of behavior
analysis to help couples to explore their sexual interests in a free and open
manner. Too frequently, we are bound by beliefs that were built into us very
early regarding the "dirty" or sinful nature of sex. Consequently,
we wind up developing attitudes of shame regarding this highly personal topic.
If then, by some chance, we wind up developing some sort of sexual dysfunction,
we are loath to discuss it even with our partners.
It is important to realize
that sexuality is an important aspect of our lives, and very natural. There
is tremendous variation in what people find exciting, and part of the process
of growing as a couple is learning to explore that which turns each other on,
in an open and supportive atmosphere. Dr. Newman is an advocate of "play
therapy for couples," a process by which couples can learn to communicate
and work together to overcome common sexual dysfunctions such as premature ejaculation
and orgasmic dysfunction. Through this process, not only are dysfunctions overcome,
but couples learn to open up and share those "secret" turn-ons and
to enjoy the sexual experience as never before.
Sex is a very special form
of behavior, but the processes follow the same laws as all other aspects of
behavior. We must learn to think properly and avoid irrational beliefs regarding
sex, and expose ourselves to those experiences that help our bodies relearn
to simply enjoy the sexual experience as we were meant to do.
