Why Can't I Stop Smoking?
People who smoke are frequently frustrated by their inability to stop. They call themselves "weak" because of this failure, and people around them are only too happy to agree. Such a conception is far too simplistic, however.
Smoking is a complex behavior, which has physiological and behavioral components. The physical systems of people who smoke become accustomed to the levels of nicotine, and set off powerful cravings if levels drop too low. Smoking also becomes "paired" with a wide variety of pleasurable social situations, and these situations become triggers for further cravings.
Purely physical approaches such as "the patch" are prone to failure. They may address some of the physical cravings, but completely ignore the behavioral component, and don't teach people how to live without cigarettes, or how to fight the cravings when they occur.
To beat smoking requires a multimodal behavioral approach. A literature of very effective techniques exists, and a competent practitioner can help even the most hardcore smoker to stop. We encourage you to avail yourself of such help.
